Earthquakes, fires, blindness, racism, the death of their children—many of these women endured hardships that I can hardly imagine.

However, one thing remained completely steady and constant in their lives . . . their Lord, Jesus Christ.

When Others Shuddered: Eight Women Who Refused to Give Up When Others Shuddered: Eight Women Who Refused to Give Up is a book written by Jamie Janosz. It follows the lives of eight different women who lived during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.

These women lived in a time when they did not have the same rights and privileges as men. Some of these women never had the right to vote. Some of these women were born to former slaves and had to fight tooth and nail for their education. They were looked down upon; they were ridiculed; they were attacked.

They gave everything for the One that gave everything for them.

It is amazing to see the way that the Lord directed the lives of Emeline Dryer, Sarah Dunn Clarke and the six other ladies in this book.

They followed Him, whether around the world or around turn-of-the century Chicago, into the houses of presidents or the houses of prostitutes. Wherever they went, they ministered to the people that God called them to and served the Lord. To see the joy that they had in their work and the love that they had for the people they ministered to was such a blessing.

In the book you will read the story of a blind eight year old who wrote these words: “Oh, what a happy soul I am, Although I cannot see, I am resolved that in this world Contented I will be.”

This little girl, with joy pouring from her, grew up and wrote many of our favorite hymns that are still sung today.

During her life she had the opportunity to work with some of the most renowned Christian leaders of her day. Men like D.L. Moody and Ira Sankey were her collaborators and friends.

This is just a hint of the amazing things that God did in the life of Fanny Crosby, one of the eight women in this book.

Some circumstances in their lives would have, in our eyes, deemed them as unfit for the Lord’s service, but these were the things that God used to grow them in their trust in Him. It is a comfort to know that God can use the most broken of us to do the biggest and the best things for Him.

Whether you are looking for a book to motivate and inspire you to do bigger and better things for God, or a book that will keep you reading, When Others Shuddered: Eight Women Who Refused to Give Up is for you. The book’s narrative style is compelling and draws you into the true stories of these women’s lives.

I hope you enjoy it and are brought to a better understanding of how God can use women mightily for His kingdom.
