Ken Davis tells a story about the time he woke up in the middle of the night with a revolutionary idea.
You’ve probably had that happen to you.
You were sound asleep, only to suddenly awaken at zero-dark-thirty with the next million dollar idea in your head.
And you were scared that you would forget it when you went back to sleep.
In Ken’s case, he did what many of us would do.
He turned the light on, reached for a piece of paper, wrote the idea down, and blissfully went back to sleep.
Only to discover the next morning that he had written just a single word down:
Chicken.
What the chicken did, what the chicken ate, or why the chicken crossed the road, he couldn’t remember.
His brilliant idea flew the coop.
Ideas aren’t the only things that can fly away. There are many things in our lives that can quickly get out of control when we aren’t diligent or detailed.
Our calendars.
Our email inboxes.
Our taxes.
Our recordkeeping.
Our work/life balance.
Our websites and social media accounts.
As I’ve pondered this in my own life, I’ve been gently nudged by Proverbs 27:23-24:
“Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds. For riches are not for ever: and doth the crown endure to every generation?”
Let’s keep an eye on those chickens.
