Goal Hunger: Why Just Having Goals Isn’t Always Enough

By September 26, 2013December 28th, 2013No Comments

Setting goals is a good start, but just making a list won’t get you closer to your dreams.

If you plan to reach those goals, you have to want them, too. That want, that desire, that passion is something I call Goal Hunger.

The amount of your goal hunger will often directly relate to your degree of success. So after you have made your goal list, ask youself, “how hungry are you?”

Do you want it enough to . . .

Make Sacrifices

Achieving your goal will often require you to give up something else.

I’ve been having this reinforced in my own life as I’ve been making some health adjustments with the goal of better health. I’ve suffered from food allergies for years, so I thought I was an expert at giving up foods, but that was before I was told I had to sacrifice sugar and the few gluten-free breads that I can eat. It’s not been easy, and I keep having to remind myself that the only way I will reach my goal of better health is to make sacrifices.

What do you need to give up? If your goal is to start a new business, you’ll have to give up more than a few hours of free time. If your goal is to get in shape, you are going to have to sacrifice the donuts. Are you hungry enough to make sacrifices?

Change Your Lifestyle

Lifestyle changes are often the hardest. We’re creatures of habit—and most of us don’t like change. And lifestyle changes are often not minor.

Are you hungry enough to change not just a habit, but your life? If your heart’s desire is to grow closer to God, you must have the courage to become counter-cultural and live your life with an eternal perspective. If you want successfully convey your organization’s message, you are going to have to live it first.

Stay With It for the Long Haul

Are you a fair-weather goal setter? Is it easy for you to draw up a list of resolutions on January 1, but by February 1, you have slipped back into old habits?

Reaching your goals might take weeks, months, or even years. Are you hungry enough to stay committed? Or are you just willing to nibble on the shell of your goal?

Many people are goal nibblers. Nibblers will never change the world.

So ask yourself, do I have that passion, that drive, that motivation, that hunger to stick with it for the long haul?

Your answer will reveal not just whether you will ever be successful, but it will also give you a deeper glimpse into your real character.
