I often pray that God would show us where He is at work—and to give us the courage to join Him there.

Recently, I paused to reflect on what I was actually asking God to do.

One of my favorite stories in the Gospels is the story of the Greeks who were looking for Jesus. They came to the disciples with a simple, but emphatic request: “Sir, we would see Jesus.”

Five simple words.

Words we should echo in our own hearts.

Jesus did more than just see them. He gave them a call to service that we should never forget.

“If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.” John 12:26, emphasis mine

Are you following God—and joining Him in His work? Or are you just crossing paths with Him, every now and then?

Following God, seeing where He is at work, and joining Him there does indeed require courage.

Courage to take a different path than your friends and in some heartbreaking times, even your family.

Courage to take a lifelong journey that might grow lonely for earthly companionship.

Courage to go against cultural norms.

Courage to go against the expectations of you.

Courage to follow God wherever He leads.

Courage to remain content simply because you are where He is.

The next time I pray those simple words of asking for courage, I’ll probably pause for a moment, and think once again about what I’m really asking.

But I’ll only pause for just a second.

Because deep in my heart, I have one simple request:

“I would see Jesus.”
