Today, let’s talk marketing. Specifically, what is marketing?
Webster’s dictionary defines the word marketing as “the process or technique of promoting, selling, and distributing a product or service.”
That is a good definition of the word, but I think this definition from Seth Godin prompts us to dig much deeper:
“Modern marketing is the practice of making something worth talking about, developing empathy for those you seek to serve and being in the market in a way that people would miss you if you were gone.”
Let’s break down Godin’s definition into small pieces….and ask some questions.
Have you created something that is worth other people talking about?
Have you developed empathy (the feeling that you understand and can share their experience & emotions) with the people you want to serve?
Are you leaving such a footprint in the market that people would miss you if you were gone?
Run your entire marketing strategy through this three-fold test. If you answer “no” to any of those questions, go back to the drawing board.
Spend more time researching your market and their needs. Fine tune your products and services so you can make a lasting impact in people’s lives.
Anyone can attempt to promote, sell, or distribute a product or service.
But when you can say “yes” to all three of those other crucial points, you’ll reach the level of effective marketing.
